Public Speaking

Public Speaking is an important skill to have. 4-H recognizes the importance of this skill and offers various ways to practice through: Demonstrations, Public Speaking Contest, judging, etc. The Baltimore County 4-H Public Speaking and Demonstration contest is scheduled for March 14th @ 6:30 p.m.

Here are some tips from various state 4-H programs that will surely help improve your 4-Hers prepare:

  • Make sure you are prepared and so your research. Pick a topic you are interested in and audience will be able to see your interest level. You do not want to be too broad in when giving your speech. Be as specific as possible.
  • When giving your speech, make sure you make eye contact with your audience. It helps connect you with your audience. You also want to make sure you have good posture. Stand tall, and do not lean on the podium. Speak slowly and loudly. Make sure you practice your speech frequently. Practicing your speech will make you feel comfortable and confident when you finally get in front of the audience. Lastly, do not forget to smile!
  • Being a great public speaker can open many doors for you. It leads to developing great critical thinking skills, understanding verbal and non-verbal skills, and being a great communicator. It is a very valuable skill that will pay off over time.
